Heidi
Heidi became TLC’s 7000th adoption after a long and challenging journey.
She arrived at TLC in November 2021, just under a year old, after being passed through multiple homes. Despite being a purebred GSD, Heidi struggled with reactivity, likely due to past abuse, and was particularly afraid of people’s hands, especially when holding cell phones. Her breed and color—black dogs often face more adoption challenges—made her journey even harder. After multiple failed adoptions, Heidi returned to TLC each time, where she continued her training and worked through trauma with the help of patient trainers.
“By not giving up on a dog that many people before had, we were able to make Heidi’s dreams come true - a forever family that loves her for exactly who she is. ”
Finally, after battling health issues like heartworm treatment, Heidi’s perseverance paid off when a family who had recently lost their own reactive GSD found her. This family, understanding Heidi’s unique needs, took their time getting to know her through multiple meetings and even a short-term sleepover to ensure they were the right match.
Their commitment and patience paid off, and Heidi, after years of struggle, found her forever home. As TLC’s 7000th adoption, Heidi’s story is a reminder that with dedication and patience, the perfect home is always out there, waiting for dogs like her
“Heidi has impacted my life in two significant ways: she has taught and shown me how to open my heart and love again and helped me become whole again.”
